Hyde Park, MA – Mayor Wu, Senator Warren, Lieutenant Governor Driscoll, and residents celebrated the grand opening of The Pryde in Hyde Park, Massachusetts’ first LGBTQ-affirming, income-restricted housing community for seniors. The project converted the former Barton Rogers School in Hyde Park, originally constructed in 1899, into 74 affordable apartments. Universal provided historic replica windows for over 250 openings from their double-hung and fixed 400 Series, as well as additional windows from the steel replica 700 Series.

The housing community was developed by a joint venture between the development team of Pennrose, LGBTQ Senior Housing, Inc., and the City of Boston Mayor’s Office of Housing. Designed by DiMella Shaffer and constructed by NEI General Contracting, The Pryde includes studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments. Several units were set aside for the formerly homeless, and 70% of the units give preference to current Boston residents at initial lease-up. It features a 10,000 s/f community center, a learning classroom, a library, and an art exhibition space. There is also a multipurpose space for neighborhood meetings and events, making the Pryde a centerpiece of community activities in the area.

“We are incredibly proud to have supported the development of The Pryde through the Community Preservation Act funds,” said Felicia Jacques, Chair of the Community Preservation Committee This groundbreaking project not only preserves a piece of Boston’s history by revitalizing the former William Barton Rogers Middle School, but it also embodies our commitment to creating inclusive, affordable housing for our senior residents. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this vibrant new community will have on Hyde Park.”
