Brooklyn, NY – Universal Window and Door provided over 150 historic replica windows for the recently completed comprehensive window replacement project for the Pratt Hall North building on the Pratt Institute campus in Brooklyn. The school is the alma mater of innumerable prominent New York-based and national architects, including Annabelle Selldorf, William Van Alen (who designed the Chrysler Building), and Pritzker Prize winner Peter Zumthor. In order to meet Pratt Institute’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, Brooklyn-based window installer WindowFix selected Universal Window of Marlborough, MA, whose replica windows are installed in hundreds of buildings on the National Park Service list of Historic Places.
“Universal checked all the boxes,” said WindowFix CEO Ernie Cappello. “They were able to customize the windows to replicate the historical details while meeting the performance grade, design pressure (DP), and energy ratings, while delivering the windows in a timely fashion that allowed us to complete the project ahead of schedule.”
Talisen Construction worked closely with Matiz Architecture & Design to choose window designs that preserved the aesthetic integrity of North Hall, which was designed by the famed New York architectural firm McKim, Mead & White and constructed in 1958. The replacement windows came in various sizes, shapes, and styles from Universal’s 400, 500, and 700 Series to match the architectural diversity of Pratt Hall North, including fixed, double-hung, casement, radius, and distinctive arched windows that reflect the classical architecture of the hall. The thermally broken aluminum design contributed to better insulation, reducing energy consumption and enhancing the building’s overall sustainability. The project included several oversized windows, with dimensions reaching up to 100 x 94 inches.
“Universal Window was honored to be able to contribute to the renovation of the campus of one of the nation’s most prestigious architectural institutions,” said Jim Finn, president and CEO of Universal Window and Door.
