Yarn Works

Project Description: Built in 1905, Yarn Works is the former home of the Fitchburg Yarn Company. The 182,500 square foot former mill was converted into 96 units of mixed-income housing. Universal Window and Door provided more than 280 8-foot by 10-foot windows, providing each unit with expansive views and an abundance of natural light, with custom windows installed throughout the building. The historically accurate aluminum replacement windows also allowed the redevelopment to meet the stringent requirements necessary to qualify for Federal and State Historic Tax Credits from the National Park Service and Massachusetts Historical Commission.

Project Challenge/Solution: Yarn Works 400 DH, some were true half-circle windows
Fitchburg has 300-plus Windows, the majority of which were 700 Series. Fixed and vents on the lower section and the top were fixed transoms. The challenge was due to the sheer size 700 fixed large opening 15’ x 9’ true arched transoms
